Excellence in Media Award for Global Health

The Excellence in Media Award for Global Health is dedicated to drawing attention to health issues that have a global impact. The award honors those who have in the prior year most effectively captured the essence of a major issue in global health and conveyed it to a broad audience.

The Global Health Council recognizes the vital role played by the media in informing the public as well as decision-makers, and seeks through this award to highlight the important contributions to understanding and action made by the winner of the award.

The Council welcomes Media Award submissions in the following four categories:
Newspaper, Magazine and Major Print Publication (NY Times, the New Yorker, the Economist, TIME Magazine, the London Times)

Broadcast, TV and "New Media" (video, mixed media, radio and internet-based)

Photojournalism

Community Media (community, local, in-country media of all types from, but not limited to, developing countries. This includes newspaper, community radio and Internet-based, and does not include any major news organizations or companies)

Nomination Criteria

1. Entries may be made by any individual or organization from material appearing in print or electronic media
2. Entries may be made by U.S.-based and non-U.S.-based individuals or organizations
3. Entries must be submitted electronically with a nomination letter
4. Eligible works must have been published or aired between Feb. 1, 2009 and Feb. 1, 2010
5. Submissions must be in English
6. Selection of the awardee is based on the quality of the reporting as well as its wide reach among readers and viewers

The award is given for a distinguished example of reporting on global health issues. Nominees include institutions or independent journalists. All works are to be characterized by a high caliber of writing, accurate reporting, and emphasis on influencing public behavior through education on the issue.

Nominations will be considered by an independent panel of noted journalists. The jury reserves the right to award prizes in fewer than the four categories listed above.
